The Cadillac XTS (short for X-Series Touring Sedan)[7] is a full-size car built by the American company Cadillac from 2013 until 2019. It is a four-door sedan with seating for up to five passengers. Based on an enlarged version of the Epsilon II platform, it has a front-mounted engine that either drives the front wheels or drives all four wheels.[8]

Replacing the smaller Cadillac STS and larger DTS,[9] production began in May 2012 at the Oshawa Assembly Plant and launched in June as a 2013 model. Marketed with left-hand drive in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, and the Middle East (except Israel), the XTS was also assembled by Shanghai GM, with production beginning in February 2013.

Interior[edit]

Interior

In addition to the base XTS, there are five trim packages labeled "Luxury", "Premium Luxury", and "Platinum", with the optional XTS V-Sport offered in both "V-Sport Premium Luxury" and "V-Sport Platinum". Some of the standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, 4G LTE connectivity, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, leather seat-upholstery, 8-way power front seats, parking assist and comprehensive safety equipment like ABS, stability control, dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, side-curtain airbags front and rear, and a driver side knee airbag.

Optional equipment includes separate climate controls for rear seat passengers, coupled with 8" LCD screens that flip up from the front passenger seat-backs, allowing an internal DVD player to display content with wireless headphones. The interior can be outfitted in a large assortment of color combinations, along with four wood selections. Cadillac's CUE system is standard with an 8-speaker Bose sound system, including HD Radio and SiriusXM. An optional 14-speaker Bose sound package includes AudioPilot noise compensation technology.

Powertrain[edit]

The XTS is available with two engines, a four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo for China only, and a 3.6-liter with 304 hp (227 kW) and 264 lb⋅ft (358 N⋅m), with available twin-turbocharging on the XTS V-Sport providing 410 hp (306 kW) and 369 lb⋅ft (500 N⋅m) together with cylinder deactivation. The XTS is available in both front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive (standard on V-Sport vehicles) which includes a limited slip differential and torque vectoring.[10]

Other versions[edit]

A long-wheelbase version XTS, called the XTS-L, as well as limousine and hearse versions were available for fleet and coachbuilder markets, however they are no longer manufactured as of late 2019.

XTS Platinum concept[edit]

Cadillac XTS Platinum concept

General Motors exhibited a concept sedan called the XTS Platinum at the 2010 North American International Auto Show after privately unveiling the vehicle to automotive journalists on August 11, 2009.[11] The concept was all-wheel drive and was powered by a 3.6 L (220 cu in) V6 plug-in hybrid system estimated at 350 hp (260 kW).[12] Its interior was based on hand-cut-and-sewn materials and uses Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays in place of traditional gauges and screens.[12] A Platinum version of the production XTS went on sale in 2013.

There is an available twin-turbocharged V-6 that provides the kind of wafting power we desire from executive cruisers, and there are plenty of luxe features in the upper trim levels. But despite its general elegance, the XTS can't come close to the opulence and refinement of the king of this particular jungle, the Mercedes-Benz S-class. By offering its wares at a much lower price than Mercedes (and holding on to some of the brand magic that makes the XTS more desirable than the similarly priced Genesis G90), Cadillac makes its case: the XTS is a credible option for broad-based luxury that will please buyers in search of some status and style, but not so much that they'll need a second mortgage to afford it. What's New for 2019? Cadillac hasn't made many changes to its 2019 XTS sedan. The car's standard wireless smartphone charging feature now offers more charging power thanks to beefed-up internals and a larger charging surface. Otherwise, the XTS is unchanged. Pricing and Which One to BuyThe price of the 2019 Cadillac XTS starts at $47,890 and goes up to $73,990 depending on the trim and options.Base$47,890Luxury$51,890Premium Luxury$58,290Platinum$67,190V-Sport$73,990 We prefer the XTS V-Sport's 410-hp twin-turbo V-6 to the standard 304-hp V-6. That raises the cost of our preferred XTS considerably, but it's still many thousands cheaper than its German rivals. The V-Sport comes standard with all-wheel drive in place of the standard front-wheel-drive setup and includes adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, rear armrest with built-in audio and sunshade controls, and 22-way adjustable massaging leather front seats. The V-Sport is the XTS's top trim and nearly every one of its available features is included as standard, but we'd happily shell out $350 for a compact spare tire. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Likes: Quick with the twin-turbo V-6, placid ride, available adaptive suspension. Dislikes: Not a sports sedan by any stretch, base engine is slower than similarly powered rivals. The XTS comes standard with front-wheel drive and a 304-hp V-6 engine, while top-of-the-line V-Sport models have a 410-hp twin-turbo V-6 with all-wheel drive. Both engines pair with a six-speed automatic, and the entry-level engine can be paired with all-wheel drive if desired. We don't have recent test data for a non-V-Sport XTS, but the powertrain hasn't changed since we recorded a 6.6-second zero-to-60-mph time in a front-drive model. An all-wheel-drive variant of the 304-hp car needed 7.2 seconds to complete the same task. Those figures are respectable if not impressive and won't leave XTS owners frustrated on highway on-ramps. The V-Sport's engine is a much better fit for the XTS's large-luxury attitude. It provides effortless power both off the line and when accelerating to pass, and its zero-to-60-mph time is right in the mix with most competitors at 5.2 seconds. The XTS is big and feels every bit its size on the road. Our test car featured the available adaptive suspension, and the ride was smooth and airy even over rough surfaces. There is very little feedback from the road through the large steering wheel, and it's hard to imagine any driver taking the XTS for a joyride. The XTS simply is not a sports sedan, and we'd wager that most people who buy this car are perfectly happy with its luxury-minded tuning.More on the Cadillac XTS2018 Cadillac XTS - In-Depth Review - Gallery2018 Cadillac XTS: The Front-Drive Caddy LivesTested: 2014 Cadillac XTS Vsport Twin-Turbo V-6 TeFuel Economy and Real-World MPG We haven't tested an XTS in our 200-mile real-world highway fuel-economy test, but its EPA highway rating of just 23 mpg suggests that the V-Sport's powerful engine is not as efficient as comparable engines from superior competitors. The lower-powered and front-wheel-drive XTS earns a 28-mpg highway rating. Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo Likes: Plush seats, folding rear seatbacks improve cargo capacity, desirable infotainment features are standard. Dislikes: Not as luxurious as its rivals, fussy touch-sensitive controls, disappointing massaging seats. The XTS is huge and comfortable, although several in this class outdo it for rear-seat legroom. Cadillac pulled out all the stops in outfitting the XTS, but you'll have to open up your wallet wide to enjoy them. Rear-seat audio controls, an interior ambient-lighting system, and heated and cooled massaging front seats with 22-way adjustment are all available, but of our favorite luxury-car features, only a power-adjustable steering wheel and front seats are standard. Persnickety customers should note that Cadillac's massaging-seat function, while pleasant, is not nearly as well executed as Mercedes-Benz's. Cadillac's infotainment system has all the makings of an excellent offering, but its finicky and unreliable touch-based controls are frustrating, especially when attempting to operate the system while driving. An 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an eight-speaker Bose audio system, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot are standard; navigation, a 14-speaker Bose audio system, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display are optional. The XTS's long rear overhang has one major benefit: it allows for an extra-large cargo hold—offering 18 cubic feet compared with 16 in the G90 and the S-class—which was enough room for seven carry-on bags during our testing. It is relatively normal for cars in this class to have fixed rear seats, but the XTS's seats fold nearly flat, which means a lot more space for luggage in a pinch.Safety and Driver-Assistance FeaturesOverall Safety Rating (NHTSA)View Crash Test Results The XTS did well on its crash testing (although it received incomplete testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and offers plenty of driver-assistance technologies in upper trim levels. None of that technology is standard, however, and child-seat anchors can be hard to locate. Key safety features include:Available front and rear automated emergency braking Available adaptive cruise control Available blind-spot monitoring Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Cadillac's warranty-coverage periods mostly match those of its luxury competitors, and its six-year or 70,000-mile powertrain warranty is one of the best in class. But Genesis offers longer coverage periods in most categories, and the Lincoln Continental's unlimited roadside-assistance plan is without equal in the industry. Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles Powertrain warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles Complimentary maintenance is covered for the first visit Shopping ToolsWhat's My Car Worth?Car and Driver values are calculated from the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.Get EstimateInsurance MarketplaceSee what you can save on car insurance.Learn MoreAuto Loans & FinancingOur finance experts answer any questions you may have about financing a vehicle.Learn MoreAdvertisement - Continue Reading BelowMore From Cadillac2026 Cadillac VistiqStarting at$65,000 estEPA Est. The Best Year for Cadillac XTS

The 2019 Cadillac XTS stands out as the best year for this luxury large car model.

One of the primary reasons why the 2019 XTS is considered the best year is due to its upgraded features and improvements compared to earlier years.

The vehicle offered a smooth ride and an impressive combination of performance, comfort, and style that met the expectations of luxury car enthusiasts.

Key attributes of the 2019 Cadillac XTS included:

a spacious and comfortable cabin,

featuring high-quality materials

and advanced technology features.

The infotainment system was user-friendly, and passengers enjoyed ample space, adding to the overall appeal of this model year.

The 2nd Best Year for Cadillac XTS

The 2017 Cadillac XTS stands out as the second-best model year for this luxury sedan.

This year marked significant improvements in terms of:

features,

reliability,

and overall driving experience.

One of the notable enhancements of the 2017 XTS was its V-Sport Premium Luxury trim level. This model came equipped with a 3.6L Turbo V6 Gas engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, providing an impressive balance of power and fuel efficiency.

Additionally, the 2017 XTS received high marks for its interior design and comfort.

Consumers appreciated the plush, spacious seating, as well as the user-friendly infotainment system.

The integration of advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision alert, contributed to the model’s appeal and increased the overall sense of security for drivers and passengers alike.

In comparison to other model years, the 2017 Cadillac XTS managed to strike a balance between performance and luxury, without sacrificing reliability.

Its exceptional features and enhanced driving experience make it an ideal choice for those seeking a quality ride and a touch of sophistication.

Other Good Years for Cadillac XTS

These years offer respectable performance and features, contributing to the overall reputation of the model.

The following is a list of additional good years for the Cadillac XTS:

2016: The 2016 Cadillac XTS V-Sport Premium featured a 3.6L Turbo V6 Gas engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive as standard. With improved handling and a strong focus on luxury and comfort, the 2016 model was well-received by buyers and critics alike.

2017: The 2017 Cadillac XTS V-Sport Premium Luxury continued to build on previous features, offering the same engine and transmission as the 2016 model. Additionally, various technological and safety enhancements were implemented, making it a desirable choice for those seeking a sophisticated and safe luxury vehicle.

2019: The 2019 model year saw the inclusion of several available active safety systems, increasing the overall safety of the vehicle. Each of these model years has contributed to the enduring appeal of the XTS, earning its place as a reliable and sophisticated choice within the luxury vehicle market.

The Worst Year for Cadillac XTS

Among the various years of the Cadillac XTS production, the 2013 model stands out as the most troublesome.

According to car owners’ complaints and several reports, the 2013 Cadillac XTS experienced a higher number of issues compared to other model years.

One of the main concerns with the 2013 XTS was the quality and performance of its electrical system, which was reported to cause several inconveniences for drivers.

While this issue was not catastrophic, it did create frustration for some owners.

Despite these shortcomings, it is essential to recognize that the 2013 Cadillac XTS was not without merit.

Many owners enjoyed the vehicle’s styling, performance, and features.

Additionally, not all units suffered from these issues, and some drivers had positive experiences with their 2013 XTS models. While this year may have had some notable setbacks compared to its counterparts, it still had valuable qualities as a luxury sedan.

Other Bad Years for Cadillac XTS

While the 2013 Cadillac XTS model year tends to have the most overall complaints, there are some other years that also faced some challenges, albeit to a lesser extent.

Below are a few additional Cadillac XTS years that experienced issues:

2017 Cadillac XTS: This model year saw some changes and updates, but it also had a few drawbacks. Primarily, the infotainment system was reported to be slow and unresponsive at times, causing some user frustration.

2015 Cadillac XTS: Some drivers reported excessive tire wear and occasional issues with the electronic parking brake. While these concerns were not as widespread as those found in other years, they still deserve mention.

2014 Cadillac XTS: There were a few reports of steering issues in the 2014 XTS model, where the power steering would occasionally stop working temporarily. While this issue wasn’t as common, it deserves attention due to its potential impact on driving safety.

It is worth noting that these issues do not represent the experience of all Cadillac XTS owners from these model years, but rather those who encountered specific problems.

In many cases, XTS drivers enjoyed their vehicles and experienced minimal issues, if any.

However, these additional years are highlighted to provide greater context for potential buyers.

Years with the Most Recalls

The Cadillac XTS has experienced recalls in various model years. These recalls have ranged from minor software updates to more significant concerns related to safety or the performance of the vehicle.

According to the search results, the 2013 Cadillac XTS has the most overall complaints.

This is supported by CarComplaints.com, which rates 2013 as the worst model year due to factors such as repair cost and average mileage when problems occur.

Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides recall data that can be used to identify the worst years for Cadillac XTS recalls.

While the XTS isn’t quite the land yacht of these previous models, this is definitely the type of car for people who value a smooth and whisper-quiet ride over tire-smoking acceleration and razor-sharp handling. In terms of its size, the XTS competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-class, Audi A8, and BMW 7-series. When it comes to overall refinement and driving manners, however, the XTS can’t compete with these swifter, more advanced rivals. To its credit, this Caddy sedan costs thousands less than that German trio, and an available twin-turbocharged V-6 engine provides extra hustle when needed. What's New for 2017? The XTS enters the 2017 model year with just a few notable updates. The gauge cluster has been revised, the Teen Driver vehicle monitoring system is standard, and V-Sport models have new 20-inch alloy wheels.PricingOriginal MSRP:Base: $46,590Luxury: $50,590Premium Luxury: $57,090Platinum: $65,890Vsport: $65,090 Engine, Transmission, and PerformanceThe XTS comes standard in front-wheel drive format powered by a 304-hp V-6 engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. This provides reasonable levels of straight-line performance, though we’re partial to the optional twin-turbo V-6 that delivers 410 horsepower in the Vsport model. This not only endows the XTS with quicker zero-to-60 mph times, but the Vsport has the added grip that comes with its standard all-wheel drive (an option with the base V-6). No matter which engine you choose, the ride and handling are biased more towards driving comfort than corner-carving dynamics, unlike the XTS's European rivals. That isn’t necessarily a demerit for American luxury-car shoppers who generally don’t care about Nürburgring lap-time bragging rights. View PhotosMICHAEL SIMARI|Car and DriverFuel EconomyEPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.Interior, Comfort, and CargoThe XTS excels at providing plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Supportive front seats help melt away the miles during long trips, and the second row has more than enough headroom and legroom for adults of all shapes and sizes. One thing lacking from the XTS is a higher degree of standard comfort touches, such as heated and cooled front seats, upgraded leather seating surfaces, and front seats with a massage function. They’re all available, but you have to start adding pricey option packages or climb to higher trims to get them. The trunk measures in at a roomy 18 cubic feet in capacity, which is ample even for a large luxury sedan. When it comes to various interior nooks and crannies for all the detritus of daily driving, the XTS is about average in terms of cabin storage space.View PhotosMICHAEL SIMARI|Car and DriverThe Car and Driver DifferenceOur Comprehensive Car Testing ExplainedWhy We Test: Every Number Tells a StoryInfotainment and ConnectivityThe 8.0-inch infotainment screen in the XTS is notable for coming standard with popular features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, wireless smartphone charging, USB ports, and an eight-speaker stereo with satellite radio. Higher trims add such luxuries as navigation and a 14-speaker Bose audio system. That’s the good news. Unfortunately, the touch-sensitive controls of Cadillac’s CUE software simply take too much of the driver’s attention to navigate easily. Something as straightforward as adjusting cabin temperatures or stereo volume requires a deft touch to get correct on the first or second attempt. A few tactile buttons or knobs would go a long way towards making the XTS’s tech features more user-friendly.How to Buy and Maintain a CarHow to Buy or Lease a New CarHow to Buy a Used CarHow to Repair, Maintain, and Care for Your Car Safety Features and Crash Test RatingsOverall Safety Rating (NHTSA)View Crash Test ResultsFor more information about the Cadillac XTS’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.WarrantySome older vehicles are still eligible for coverage under a manufacturer's Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program. 2018 Cadillac XTS V-Sport First Test: Nicer Than You Think, But…

2018 Cadillac XTS V-Sport First Test: Nicer Than You Think, But…

Celebrate 75 YearsLearn MoreNewsReviewsBuyer's GuideWatchMotorTrend+The FutureEventsSweepstakes2018 Cadillac XTS V-Sport First Test: Nicer Than You Think, But…Caught between the CTS and CT6Zach GaleWordsDarren MartinPhotosMay 24, 2018The XTS is for anyone who's ever tried to sit in the CTS' back seat behind a tall driver. Sure, the CTS is an accomplished, comparison-winning sport sedan and our 2014 Car of the Year, but the XTS provides far more space at the same price. And in the 410-hp, all-wheel-drive V-Sport Platinum form, the updated 2018 XTS does its best to earn a $73,840 price tag and eradicate associations you may have of the XTS as chauffeur-driven airport transportation.Riding on the same platform as the Chevrolet Impala and Buick LaCrosse, the front- and all-wheel-drive XTS provides a level of interior space you won't find on some of the Cadillac's competition. And our Platinum-trimmed tester impressed us with rich interior materials nearly everywhere—well beyond those platform-mates and easily the match of top-tier competition. The V-Sport model elevates performance with its combination of all-wheel drive and a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 making 410 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The 2018 XTS V-Sport reached 60 mph in 5.2 seconds at the track, a noticeable 1.7-second improvement over a 304-hp base-engined all-wheel-drive XTS we've tested. A 5.2-second 0-60 time is quick for a 200.9-inch car, but others in the XTS V-Sport's segment can keep up. We tested a rear-drive Genesis G80 with a V-8 engine (then known as a Hyundai Genesis) accelerating to 60 in 5.2 seconds, and the newer rear-drive G80 with a twin-turbo V-6 is just as quick. Despite having about 100 fewer horses than the Cadillac, an all-wheel-drive 2017 Volvo S90 T6 reached 60 in 5.6 seconds, and a 2017 BMW 540i smoked all of them with a 4.9-second time.None of those competitors have the XTS' 18-cubic-foot trunk, however, and the midsize BMW isn't quite as spacious as the Cadillac. Despite the XTS' size, testing director Kim Reynolds said the car is "much better handling than you'd predict looking at it." On the figure-eight test, which tracks driving characteristics such as acceleration, braking, cornering, and the transitions between them, the Cadillac turned in a performance of 26.0 seconds at 0.70 g (average). The car exhibited noticeable roll and pitch on the track, but Reynolds commented that its suspension was damped acceptably. The XTS V-Sport's figure-eight performance compares favorably to both G80 models, is slightly better than the S90 T6, but isn't as good as the 540i.Braking from 60 to 0 required 121 feet, behind the two G80s (116 feet), the 540i (117 feet), and the 2017 S90 (108 feet), but it's worth noting that Volvo stretched that car for the 2018 model year. Road test editor Chris Walton said that for a car riding on all-season tires, the Cadillac's braking distance is respectable, but he did note the car had a "squishy pedal" and the body exhibited "lots of dive." Off the track, the XTS' brake pedal requires too much travel before any actual braking occurs. The star of the XTS V-Sport's dynamics isn't just the 410 hp under the hood, but the Magnetic Ride Control system, which produces a ride that's not overly floaty yet still doesn't pound over every road imperfection. Around town, the six-speed automatic feels like its standard transmission setting is Sport, but after more time with the car, I came to see it more as responsive than touchy. No matter how good the suspension and how responsive the transmission, though, no XTS will ever be as much fun on a winding road as a CTS.Cadillac made meaningful sheetmetal changes to the XTS for its 2018-model-year update, but the car doesn't look as premium as a CTS or any other rear-drive-based luxury sedan. Park the front-drive-based XTS near a rear-drive-based G80, and you'll see a difference in proportions, from the Genesis' longer hood to its shorter front overhang. At least front visibility in the XTS is improved by the way the short hood drops down, but between the high trunk lid and the extremely thick C-pillars, rear visibility isn't good. The XTS has decent safety scores, with a five-star overall rating (out of a possible five stars) from the NHTSA, and four Good crash-test scores from the IIHS. The XTS, which hasn't been tested in all of the IIHS' crash-test evaluations, used its automatic emergency braking system to come to a stop in a 12-mph test, avoiding a collision. In a 25-mph test, the car reduced speed by 12 mph, earning a Superior score (the highest rating). That's good, but the BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80 earn the IIHS' 2018 Top Safety Pick+ rating.Where the XTS must apologize for its size and 410-hp V-Sportiness is fuel economy. Among competitors of different sizes, the quicker BMW 540i in all-wheel-drive form is EPA-rated at 20/29 mpg city/highway to the larger XTS V-Sport's 16/23 mpg. The slightly slower Volvo S90 T6 AWD is rated at 22/31 mpg; the all-wheel-drive Genesis G80 comes in at 17/24 mpg for the 3.3T model and 15/23 mpg for the 5.0 flagship. OK, maybe buyers of large luxury sedans don't care about fuel economy, but more efficient cars don't have to refuel as often. On a highway road trip, that translates to about 74 more miles in an all-wheel-drive 540i, 39 miles in an all-wheel-drive G80 3.3T, and 44 miles in the all-wheel-drive S90 T6.Not a big deal, but worth considering. Just like the placement of the XTS' touchscreen, which at 8.0 inches, is on the small side for the segment. The screen's functionality might be improved if it were mounted higher on the center stack for better visibility. Also, even though the volume slider and HVAC capacitive-touch buttons are easy enough to use, nothing beats volume and temperature control knobs. Even so, the polarizing controls look slick when the car is off—before the button labels illuminate—with stylized silver accents on top of piano black trim. Another interior highlight is the digital instrument cluster, which is standard on the Premium Luxury, Platinum, and V-Sport Platinum trims. The system is displayed on a 12.3-inch screen and offers lots of info customization options as well as three distinct display design themes (one is unique to the V-Sport model). In Cadillac's sedan lineup, the XTS's 18-cubic-foot trunk is unmatched by even the CT6, though it's too bad the XTS doesn't offer a power-closing trunk. Cargo space should be important if you're considering this car, which sits between the sportier CTS and the also-spacious CT6. The XTS in Platinum form boasts a rich interior with (mostly) rewarding details and a decent-sized back seat. What the XTS doesn't offer at any price is the stance that can distinguish a premium-branded car from less expensive mainstream models. Don't take my word for it, though. Take an in-person look for yourself at the Genesis G80 as well as the Cadillac XTS and see if you like the proportions of one car over the other (maybe you won't care). The Genesis' biggest downside isn't its odd front grille, but its complete lack of the cachet Cadillac still holds for many buyers. Otherwise, the G80 is a good luxury sedan that, like the XTS, is bigger inside than your neighbors' 5 Series and E-Class. If you can't see yourself in the much cheaper Genesis but still dig the XTS Platinum's rich interior, try the Cadillac's standard 304-hp engine. It isn't as entertainingly swift as the 410-hp V-Sport and lacks the Buick LaCrosse's quick-shifting nine-speed automatic, but you might feel better about your decision after you apply the $6,800 you'll save toward a European vacation.2018 Cadillac XTS Platinum V-Sport AWD
